Visit The Beautiful Mangroves of Casa Cenote, A Sanctuary in Tulum

HA_Casa_Cenote-03

In Tulum, you can visit an impressive open freshwater and saltwater cenote in a 250-meter-long sanctuary: Casa Cenote. This is an ideal place to go with the whole family, with activities such as snorkeling, diving, or kayaking.

At Casa Cenote, you will find abundant fauna of both types of water, such as snapper fish, groupers, and even ducks and raccoons. The most fascinating thing about Casa Cenote is that it is only a few meters from the Caribbean Sea, which means you can enjoy both the beach and the mangroves.

What Are Mangroves?

HA_Casa_Cenote-01

You'll identify a mangrove when you see shrubs or what might look like a forest floating above the water. The mangrove is an ecosystem born from the contact between the terrestrial and marine environment*1; it has a high degree of salinity and generally belongs to tropical or coastal areas*2.

Mexico has 4 types of mangroves: red, black, white, and botoncillo. In addition, they have extensive terrestrial and marine fauna, such as the one you will find if you visit Casa Cenote. However, mangroves are more than just a tourist attraction; they do a lot for the environment.

The Importance of Mangroves

HA_Casa_Cenote-02

Mangroves are true allies against climate change since they store more carbon than tropical forests. This means that they absorb up to 10 times more greenhouse gases*1. Unfortunately, this indicates that their deforestation generates dangerous amounts of carbon emissions.

In addition to protecting our planet against climate change, mangroves also*3.

  • Provide food, shelter, and growth for their fauna.

  • Are natural flood control systems.

  • Are hurricane barriers.

  • Improve water quality as a biological filter.

  • Perform other vital functions for the environment.

Let's be respectful of mangroves when we visit the Mexican Caribbean!
