Are you a slow traveler? Find out!

HA_Slow-Travel-04

We know that, in theory, the purpose of vacations is to rest, relax, and recharge our batteries to continue our routine. However, have you ever felt like you need a “vacation from the vacations”? Exhaustion during holidays is much more common than it seems. Fortunately, a trend has been increasing to truly enjoy holidays: slow travel or slow tourism.

What is slow travel?

HA_Slow-Travel-01

Slow travel emerged from a European movement created in 1989 called slow food. Slow food aims to preserve culinary traditions and customs to prevent them from being forgotten by the emergence of fast-food chains.

Slow food philosophy was also mirrored in other areas, like slow living and travel. As its name suggests, slow travel proposes a way of traveling without rush, which can be translated into appreciating the present moment, moving away from the typical tourist spots, and getting closer to your destination's local lifestyle.

This way of traveling is ideal for you if you’re interested in:

  • Getting to know and practicing your destination’s customs
  • Enjoying authentic local cuisine
  • Learning the language
  • Discovering places that locals frequent, such as parks, restaurants, markets, etc

Recommendations for a successful slow travel

To avoid ending up exhausted from your vacations, we have a few recommendations you can put into practice on your next trip to the Mexican Caribbean.

1.     Set realistic expectations. Sometimes, getting to know all the tourist attractions and going to all the best restaurants is impossible. The fear of missing out is the leading cause of stress on a trip, so we advise you to decide on one or two unmissable activities and enjoy them in the moment. Don’t run from one place to another!

2. Don’t take pictures of everything you see. There are alternatives for remembering your hike on the beach or that delicious lunch. You can illustrate the scenery that impressed you or write a review of your favorite local restaurant. Besides stimulating your creativity, these activities will force you to stop and analyze everything you have experienced.

3. Focus on yourself. Put aside what others expect from your trip. Forget about taking the best photo for social media or going to the most popular recommendation just because. Disconnect, relax, and enjoy your vacation your way.
