Freediving: An Extreme Sport to Connect with The Sea

HA_Buceo-04-1

The most common image of extreme sports involves speed, breathtaking heights, and adrenaline. However, freediving is a sport defined by quite the opposite.

Freediving consists of immersing yourself in open water or swimming pools and descending to depths of up to more than 10 meters while voluntarily suspending your breathing. This last point is the determinant of this discipline, which is why it is also known as apnea.

Physical and Psychological Benefits

The practice of freediving is as serious as that of any other sport. It's not just about holding your breath and diving in. If not appropriately practiced, freedivers can suffer from fainting, ear, or lung injuries, or, worse, drowning1.

However, if freediving is done properly, it will benefit the respiratory, cardiovascular, circulatory, and immune systems2. Above all, it will strengthen the mental level since professionals in this sport ensure that the greatest tool to succeed in freediving is relaxation and meditation3.

Not panicking and having the patience to descend slowly into the sea is everything in this sport.

Unique Connection to The Sea

Freediving allows you to experience the depths of the ocean like never before. The fish get closer to you since you don't have diving equipment to scare them away. You also hear every sound of the sea better and can see the colorful reefs more clearly.

One of the most beautiful places to practice freediving is the Mexican Caribbean. Its turquoise and crystalline waters surround you in one of the most impressive ecosystems. In addition, on the surface, the destination is a whole world to discover and explore.
