We are a step away from the most romantic month of the year. However, we are just in time to...
Do you know the versatile local cuisine of the Riviera Maya?
When venturing to a destination as culturally rich as the Riviera Maya, trying its local cuisine is an indisputable mission. In the Riviera Maya, you will find dishes whose origins date back to the Mayan era and that, to this day, are enjoyed throughout southeastern Mexico.
Riviera Maya's local food is not only praised by the locals. Evidence of its relevance is that, since 2010, Mexican cuisine has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO*. Why don't you confirm the reason for this recognition on your next vacation?
Versatile cuisine with gourmet and street interpretations
One of the charms of Riviera Maya cuisine is that you'll find something for all preferences, whether flavor profiles, textures, or even culinary experiences. In other words, you can taste different interpretations of local food in different environments. Are you more attracted to a street food experience, or do you prefer to bet on gourmet food? You decide.
In the most popular destinations of the Riviera Maya, such as Tulum and Playa del Carmen, there is a global gastronomic scene with food from Asia, Europe, South America, and other parts of Mexico. Getting lost among so many options can be easy, but don't worry. Here, we recommend the local dishes you should try on your next trip.
Cochinita Pibil
This is an iconic recipe you'll find all over the Yucatan Peninsula. Cochinita pibil consists of pork marinated in achiote (or red spices blend) and sour orange, which are traditional regional ingredients. The authentic cooking of this dish is in underground ovens, although nowadays, it is also prepared in conventional gas ovens. Its flavor is sour and somewhat sweet, and the meat is extremely juicy.
Ceviche
Take advantage of your stay in the Riviera Maya to eat the freshest ceviche. The main protein in ceviche is seafood such as fish, shrimp, octopus, and snails, a specialty in the region. The ceviche is accompanied by chopped vegetables such as tomato, onion, coriander, and lemon juice. Enjoy it with traditional "galletas de soda" or habanero chili.
Tikin xic fish
Tikin Xic fish consists of a fish fillet opened in half, without a spine, and marinated with achiote and sour orange. The traditional cooking is in a wood oven, and when serving it, it is placed on a bed of banana leaves and coconut shells and coated with lager beer. It is accompanied by xcatic chili, red onion and tomato. Without a doubt, it is an aromatic experience!
Esquites
Esquite is one of the most popular street foods, although you can also find its gourmet version in a luxury restaurant. Esquite consists of corn kernels served in a glass, accompanied by corn broth, cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and cotija cheese. Nowadays, it's common to customize your esquite on the spot, adding extra ingredients and toppings.
Marquesitas
For dessert lovers, the marquesita is a classic that cannot be missed. It is similar to a crepe, but with the peculiarity that it is rolled up in the shape of a flute and very crisp. The traditional filling is Edam cheese, also known as "queso de bola." Nowadays, it is common to accompany it with hazelnut cream, strawberries, chocolate, among other ingredients. Its flavor is the perfect balance between sweet and salty.
