What is the Sacred Mayan Journey and What Does it Commemorate?

HA_sagrada-maya-01

For the locals of the Riviera Maya, preserving the history of their pre-Hispanic ancestors is a serious issue that they strive to do. It is also important for them to pass on the legacy of their ancestors to more people so that meaningful traditions and rituals are not lost over time.

One of these great efforts is the Sacred Mayan Journey, arranged by the Xcaret theme park. This journey recreates one of the most arduous Mayan rituals, which requires extensive preparation and physical wear. The event is taken very seriously since participants are chosen through a select and lengthy process.

The History of the Sacred Mayan Journey

Every year, the ancient Mayans of the commercial port of Pole (now Xcaret) held market days, during which they exchanged products to offer to the goddess of the moon and fertility, Ixchel, whose oracle was located on the island of Kuzamil (today, Cozumel).

Therefore, the ancient inhabitants made a canoe pilgrimage to the island of Kuzamil. The Caribbean Sea plays a critical role in this ritual since, for the Mayans, the sea was a source of food, a means of transportation, and an entrance to their underworld, the Xibalba.

Xcaret Park arranges the recreation of the Sacred Journey every year. Attendees say goodbye to the canoeists from Xcaret Park at dawn, and after their departure, they can enjoy the rest of the day in the park. It is also possible to welcome canoeists at Chankanaab Park in Cozumel.

The next day, in the morning, the canoeists who will leave for Xcaret are set off. This year, the Sacred Mayan Journey will take place on May 17 and 18.
