Summer is the opportunity to disconnect and enjoy a well-deserved vacation, but what better way to...
How long should you stay in Playa del Carmen?
Playa del Carmen is heaven on Earth, so it’s really hard to determine how many days you'll need to enjoy the sun, the white sandy beaches, and the warm Mexican Caribbean Sea. However, for practicality’s sake, we could say that you can enjoy the best activities that Playa del Carmen has to offer in 7 days. That's why today we're sharing a one-week travel itinerary we prepared to give you an idea of everything you can do here.
Enjoy Playa del Carmen in seven days
Day 1
This is your first day in the Mayan Riviera. If you're flying in, you'll most likely spend half of your day getting from the Cancun International Airport to your accommodation in Playa del Carmen. That's why we recommend taking it easy and strolling down Playa del Carmen's Fifth Avenue, a wide main street that stands out for being exclusively open to pedestrian traffic. There you'll find an endless number of restaurants, shopping centers, and stores selling everything from handcrafts to clothes, shoes, accessories, and more.
Day 2
Fifth Avenue is also home to the pier where the ferries to Cozumel island depart, so you can use this day to do a tour of the island, try some local dishes, and enjoy the beach.
Day 3
Around Playa del Carmen you will find a great number of cenotes you can visit on foot or taking a short bike ride. Some of the most popular are Cenote Chaak Tun and Cenote Ojo de Agua. In the afternoon, if you want to have fun, you can visit one of the nearby beach clubs and experience a Mexican fiesta.
Day 4
[
This is the perfect day to visit the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, one of the wonders of the world. You can hire a tour that includes a visit to Chichen Itza and a cenote, or take a bus from the ADO bus station on Fifth Avenue. The trip takes about two and a half hours each way, so let’s say it’ll be a full-day activity.
Day 5
You can't leave the Mayan Riviera without visiting the archaeological site of Tulum. The best thing about visiting this place is that it is only 45 minutes away from Playa del Carmen. This archaeological zone is right by the sea, so after your tour you can take a few minutes to swim at the foot of the pyramid. If you're still up for it, at night you can party at one of the many clubs in Playa del Carmen.
Day 6
Today we relax. Spend a morning by the beach, sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the sea breeze. Then, pamper yourself with a spa and sauna afternoon, to get rid of any remaining stress and renew your energy to go home.
Day 7
On your last day in Playa del Carmen, go back to Quinta Avenida for any last-minute shopping and get ready for your return trip. We hope that your experience in the Mayan Riviera will stay with you and encourage you to return to this paradise.
Do you need more time?
If you feel that seven days are not enough for you to fully enjoy the Mexican Caribbean, we recommend planning a trip 10 to 15 days long so that you get more days to rest and relax at the beach, and get to know other iconic places that are located in the Riviera Maya such as Akumal, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Isla Mujeres, and Bacalar, among others.
