The Riviera Maya is internationally recognized for the tourist areas of Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Tulum. However, in the further south of Quintana Roo, there is a natural paradise like no other in Mexico, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.

In the Mayan language, Sian Ka’an means “origin of the sky”, a phrase that you can understand only when you are face to face with the turquoise blue mangrove channels that connect with the sea. This is where the world ends and heaven begins.

Due to its great biodiversity, in 1987, the Reserve was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as it encompasses tropical forests, mangroves, marshes, and a vast marine area crossed by a barrier reef. Also, it houses very rich flora and fauna that coexist in the diversified environment resulting from the complex hydrological system of the site.

The easiest and fastest way to get to Sian Ka’an is by car, through Route 15 from the Archaeological Zone of Tulum to the community of Javier Rojo Gómez in Punta Allen, Quintana Roo. The trip lasts approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. From here, you can get to know the Biosphere Reserve by taking a boat tour with the fishermen's cooperatives in the area.

In the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, you will be in true contact with nature, visiting the white sand beaches, freshwater canals, and enjoying local cuisine, completely away from urban areas.

So, if you plan to visit the Riviera Maya, don't hesitate to include the Sian Ka’an Biosphere in your travel itinerary. Remember that the fastest way to get there is from Tulum, so stay in the nearby areas.
