The Riviera Maya is one of the most acclaimed destinations in Mexico due to its crystalline beaches, local cuisine, and the Mayan culture that still prevails in the region. For this reason and more, the destination remains one of the main options for vacationers and adventurers.

This demand from tourists who want to visit the Riviera Maya is reflected in the recent opening of Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum. Here, we will tell you more about this new airport, and in addition, we will give you information about the other international airports you could arrive at on your next trip to the Mexican Caribbean.

 


Tulum International Airport

On December 1, 2023, Tulum International Airport, which is located on 1,200 hectares of land, was inaugurated. The airport was built to receive up to 4 million passengers a year and to facilitate access to the south of the Riviera Maya.

At the time of writing this article, Tulum International Airport only has domestic routes to Mexico City, Toluca, Monterrey, Tijuana, and Guadalajara. Starting in March, international flights will begin with airlines such as Delta, American Airlines, and Spirit, to U.S. destinations such as Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando. *1

To get to or from the airport, visitors can purchase an ADO bus ticket to their next stop in the Riviera Maya.

 


Cancun International Airport

The International Airport Council (ACI) reported that, in 2021, Cancun International Airport was the tenth busiest airport in the world, with 13 million passengers. *2.

This airport has 4 terminals; 2 are intended for international flights only. It offers transportation to move from one terminal to another with greater comfort; it also has duty-free stores, restaurants in terminals 2, 3, and 4, a VIP waiting room, and a lost and found department.

 


Cozumel International Airport

This airport is located on the island of Cozumel, which is 47.7 kilometers from Playa del Carmen. It is a small airport with a single terminal and 8 gates to board flights. However, it is efficient, receiving approximately more than 600,000 passengers a year, both domestic and international flights.

Airlines such as Delta Airlines, Air Canada, American Airlines, and others have direct flights to Cozumel.

 


Chetumal International Airport

The capital of Quintana Roo, Chetumal, has an international airport close to the border between Mexico and Belize and receives approximately 350,000 passengers a year. It is a small airport with basic car rental, private transportation, and currency exchange services. This airport is attractive because it offers a direct route to Miami.
