Discover The Mayan Underworld with These 3 Cenotes in Tulum

HA_Cenote-Tulum-01

In Mayan culture, cenotes were the entrance to Xibalba, the underworld. These bodies of water were sacred places where the Mayans performed veneration rituals for their gods. Nowadays, cenotes are tourist attractions in the Mexican Caribbean, where visitors can explore their depths.

Exploring a cenote is simple, as several are suitable for visits. However, deciding which one to visit among the hundreds that exist can be a headache. Therefore, we recommend 3 cenotes in Tulum, where you can feel a genuine connection with the ancient Mayan world.

Atik Tulum Park

In this natural park in Tulum's jungle, you will find an open cenote with a relaxing waterfall. The most exciting thing about Atik is its immersive art exhibitions that will make you appreciate the Mayan culture more.

Atik is located at kilometer 10 of the Tulum-Coba highway. Admission to the entire park costs $449 MXN.

Aktun Chen

In the Mayan language, "aktun" means cave, and "chen" means well or cenote; that's just what you'll find in this park surrounded by nature in the region. Here, you can explore the underground cenote and caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. It also offers activities such as guided tours and zip lining.

Aktun Chen is located at kilometer 107 of the Cancun-Tulum highway. Adult access to the underground cenote costs $620 MXN.

Cenote Calavera

The peculiar name of this semi-open cenote (Skull Cenote in English) is due to its entrance, made up of 3 holes that give the appearance of a skull if viewed from above. You can go snorkeling and diving to discover this wonderful natural vault in this cenote.

Cenote Calavera is located on the Tulum-Coba highway at kilometer 1.7. The cost to access the cenote is $250 MXN.
